About the event

The Shamisen (also known as Sangen) is a traditional Japanese instrument with roots in China’s Sanxian. For centuries, it has been used in various aspects of daily life, from chamber music to theater performances, captivating listeners with its rich tones and cultural significance.

In this workshop, you’ll not only get to play the beloved tune "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on the shamisen but also have the chance to capture your experience with stunning photos as you hold this iconic instrument. It’s a unique blend of learning and fun, where you’ll both create music and lasting memories!

Connect with Japanese Culture!

The shamisen is the very instrument played by the iconic Geisha. It’s steeped in history and instantly recognizable, making it an appealing gateway to Japanese traditions.

Strike a Pose!

Even before you begin playing, simply holding the shamisen makes for an impressive shot of yourself with the instrument resting on your lap, bachi in hand, looking like a true performer.

Play International Tunes!

Not only will you explore Japanese music, but you'll also learn how to accompany foreign songs like “Let It Be” and “Top of the World” on this versatile instrument. You’ll experience it like you would a guitar sing-along, with a uniquely Japanese twist.

 What You’ll Learn

  • Shamisen Basics: Get an introduction to the shamisen—its history, the origin of its name, and the materials that make up each part.
  • Hands-On Experience: Learn how to properly hold the shamisen and use the bachi to play. By the end of the session, you'll be performing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
  • Cultural Enrichment: Enjoy live shamisen performances, showcasing its role as an instrument that beautifully accompanies vocals, whether in Japanese or English.

 Workshop Flow (120 minutes)

  1. Introduction to the Shamisen (20 mins): Through engaging storytelling, discover the origins, materials, and unique qualities of the shamisen, with a mix of visual aids like paper plays.
  2. Live Demonstration (30 mins): Hear famous English songs such as “Let It Be” and “Top of the World” performed with shamisen accompaniment. You’ll witness firsthand how this instrument elevates any song.
  3. Interactive Shamisen Playing (70 mins): It’s your turn! Take the bachi, hold the shamisen, and play along to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Capture the moment with photos, and bring home a hand-written music sheet as a keepsake!

This workshop is not only a hands-on musical experience but a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the beauty of Japanese culture. Don’t miss this opportunity to create lasting memories with the shamisen!
